John mccain, prisoner of war
Before John McCain became a senator, he was a pilot for the U.S. Navy. He was shot down over North Vietnam and held in the prisoner of war camp in Hanoi for five and a half years. His injuries included two broken arms and multiple fractures in his right leg. Like other prisoners, he was kept in horrible conditions. He has permanent injuries from his torture.
Throughout his brutal imprisonment in Hanoi, the Vietnamese attempted multiple times to have McCain be part of the propaganda campaign. They told him to say he is being treated humanely and to apologize for his war crimes. He repeatedly refused, causing him to be tortured.
John McCain's father was a high ranking admiral in the Navy, they assumed he was treated as "royalty" in the United States. There were many times where the interrogators asked him if wanted to go home and he always answered with a no. In the U.S. Military Code of Conduct, it states that you cannot take an opportunity to leave a POW camp, if given by your captor, if there were other Americans you would have to leave behind.
