Process paper
When researching my topic, The Geneva Convention and the Rights of POWs, there were many steps involved to achieve the final product. I also learned quite a bit along the way. This process and entire project has helped me develop my research skills and I have also come upon some great new tools for research.
When first starting my project, I had to decide what angle I was coming from, since there are so many with this topic. I decided to show the evolution of the regulations concerning POWs and how the world viewed them. I was able to go to the American Heritage and Education Center, AHEC, to do my research. There is a very large collection of military and civilian documents that I was able to easily access. The center was able to help me narrow down what I needed to look at. I also was able to look at one of their exhibits about a POW during WWII called "Kriegie Life: The Words and Artwork of LT Carl H. Holmstrom, Prisoner of War". After I reserved many different sources at AHEC and then went down a few times to look through them and narrow them down.
Along with the sources at AHEC, I was able to find lots of information online. This is where I was able to look at the JTF-GTMO website and contact Cdr. USN John Filostrat. I was also able to find information online about John McCain, Jane Fonda and Jessica Lynch.
Once I compiled all of my information, I started to make my website. I sorted my research into categories and was easily able to put it on the website. This is when I also started to gather pictures. I found the idea for the type of pictures I wanted from the exhibit and documents at AHEC. From there, I was easily able to locate them on the internet.
Through this process, I have learned a lot. I was surprised to find out how strict the Geneva Convention is and how few countries actually follow it. Also, I found out that the POWs are true heroes and they should be treated with the utmost respect.
