pfc. jessica lynch
Private First Class Jessica Lynch was taken prisoner of war outside of Nisiriyah in Iraq on March 23, 2003. There was footage released shortly after showing the other soldiers being executed. An Iraqi, Mohammed, who was visiting the hospital at the time witnessed her poor treatment and tortured and decided to do something to help. He walked six miles to a Marine checkpoint to tell them there is a female soldier being held in the hospital. Then, on April 1, 2003, a Special Forces team was able to rescue her. She was at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for quite some time due to her extensive wounds.
There was some controversy over how she was captured and what actions she took leading up to it. Rumors stated she fired at the Iraqis until she ran out of ammunition and killed many. She cleared up the rumors when she spoke in Congress stating her M-16 jammed and when her vehicle crashed she was knocked unconscious.
