the raid at cabanatuan
"At Cabanatuan, on the island of Luzon in January 1945, a company of the 6th Rangers battalion executed one of the most daring rescues in American history. The Rangers penetrated 29 miles (47 km) behind enemy lines, including crawling an entire mile (1 mile (1.6 km)) across an open field on their stomachs. During their final assault the rangers destroyed a garrison of Japanese soldiers twice their size and rescued 500 POWs." (U.S. Army Ranger Association)
